Columbian Exchange
The large-scale transfer of plants, animals, diseases, people, and cultural practices between the Americas (the New World) and Afro-Eurasia (the Old World), beginning with European voyages in the late 15th century.
Why is the Columbian Exchange associated with Christopher Columbus?
Columbus’s 1492 voyage initiated sustained European contact, colonization, and trade between the two hemispheres. The resulting biological and cultural transfers were named the Columbian Exchange.
How did the Columbian Exchange differ from earlier contacts between the hemispheres?
Earlier Norse visits and possible Polynesian–South American contact had limited known effects. Columbus’s voyage was followed by sustained colonization and global trade, producing transformations on a much larger scale.
