Trench warfare
A form of land warfare in which opposing forces occupy fortified, mostly static lines of trenches. Trenches protect soldiers from small-arms fire and provide substantial shelter from artillery.
What defensive methods existed before World War I?
Armies had long used field fortifications, fortified camps, siege trenches, and defensive earthworks. Examples included Roman marching camps, the Lines of Torres Vedras, Civil War trench systems, and fortified Māori pā.

Parapet and parados
The parapet is the raised earth or material along the enemy-facing edge of a trench. The parados is the raised rear edge, intended to protect soldiers from shells or fire coming from behind.
Fire step
A raised step inside a trench that allowed soldiers to see and fire over the parapet while keeping most of their bodies protected.
Why were trench floors often built with duckboards?
Wooden duckboards kept soldiers above mud and standing water. In some designs, they were raised on supports so that water could drain beneath the walking surface.
Why were trenches built in zigzags or divided by traverses?
